What is the origin of the disease?
Greek Physicians were the ones to document the disease, their former name, Hippocrates, these physicians were very smart people with ambitions and a new way of viewing our world. The Hippocrate to discover the Mumps virus was later to be named the 'Father of Medicine'. This Greek, was the first guy on his island of Kos, in Greece, to raise the thought that diseases were caused by natural happenings. Unlike many other civilians at that time who thought they were related with creepy superstitions and demon spirits. After bringing this new way of thinking into light, many years later in 1934 an American pathologist and physician discovered mumps and then were able to form a vaccine for its prevention, his name, Ernest William Goodpasture and his colleague, Claude D. Johnson. America is where it was said to start and then from that epidemic in Ohio it spread on from there.
Mumps use to be a huge problem and when sudden epidemics occurred no one knew what to do, not much has changed. For example in WWII there was a massive outbreak of Mumps causing many deaths. It got really bad, so bad that approximately every four years and outbreak would play out and every Spring and Winter it was at its worst.
Over 152,000 people were announced diagnosed with Mumps In the US, in 1968 (a while after WWII) But now with the vaccine been introduced it is very uncommon to receive the virus in well developed countries.
